bomb out (of something)

To fail spectacularly or to a great degree. Despite all the media hype, the major summer blockbuster really bombed out. He graduated at the top of his class, but his brother bombed out of college in just one semester. Everyone thought that pitcher had bombed out of the major leagues, but he really seems to have turned it around now playing for the Cubs.

bombed out

Destroyed by explosives. Rebuilding hasn't begun in that neighborhood yet—it's still all bombed out from the siege. Man, look at that bombed-out building. I wonder if they're just going to tear it down. I didn't think the enemy troops made it this far north, but a lot of the stores and homes here are bombed out.
