proverb The superstitious belief that unfortunate or detrimental events, situations, outcomes, etc., almost always arrive in groups of threes, either all at once or in quick succession. A: "I can't believe that Uncle Henry, Jean, and my neighbor all died in a week's time." B: "Well, they do say that bad things come in threes." If you already spilled coffee on yourself and got stuck in a traffic jam today, watch out—bad things come in threes. No, bad things do come in threes. My business collapsed, my wife left me, and the bank repossessed my home, all in the space of a year.
