bear hug

A strong and often immobilizing type of embrace. Jane was so excited to see her dad for the first time since his military deployment, she ran to him, wrapped her arms around him, and gave him a long bear hug. After the accident, I wrapped my kids in a bear hug for what felt like an eternity. Yeah, my ex and I were ultimately incompatible, but he gave really comforting bear hugs.

bunny hug

1. A sweatshirt with a hood and large front pockets. The term is not used outside the province of Saskatchewan in Canada. Primarily heard in Canada. I love this bunny hug, it's so warm and comfortable. Once winter hits, it gets so cold here that I just live in my bunny hug. You mean I can't just wear sweatpants and a bunny hug to dinner? I have to wear something nicer than that?
2. A ballroom dance characterized by a syncopated, ragtime rhythm, popular in the US in the early 1900s. Primarily heard in US. Although it's not as popular as other dances anymore, I still enjoy doing the bunny hug. My grandparents know dances that I've never even heard of, like the bunny hug. A: "Is that dance the bunny hug?" B: "No, I think it's the turkey trot."

commode-hugging drunk

slang Intoxicated to the point of vomiting. (A commode is a toilet, which one may "hug" while vomiting into it.) I found Henry sleeping on the bathroom floor, so he must have been commode-hugging drunk last night. I bet that if Tommy doesn't stop drinking, he'll be commode-hugging drunk all night. A: "Man, you really got commode-hugging drunk last night." B: "Ugh, I've never thrown up so much in my life."

slang To reconcile with someone by hugging, as after an argument or disagreement. I'm sorry I upset you, Jed—let's hug it out. I'm glad those two were able to hug it out—I hate when they fight. A: "I never meant to insult you." B: "Yeah, I know that now. I'm over it—let's hug it out."

slang To vomit into a toilet. Doing so often requires one to hold the toilet (the "porcelain god"), a position that is likened to embracing a sacred idol. I bet that if Tommy doesn't stop drinking, he'll hug the porcelain god all night. I've never thrown up so much in my life. I can't wait till I stop hugging the porcelain god. Something the restaurant served us must have been spoiled, because everyone was hugging the porcelain god later that evening.

bear hug

An affectionate, sometimes overwhelming embrace. In wrestling it is also known as a body lock; in business it is an aggressive offer for a takeover. But the cliché refers simply to the embrace, as in “Jane met him with a handshake, but he responded by giving her a bear hug.”
