hic Rhodus, hic salta

A Latin phrase taken from one of Aesop's fables, in which an athlete is urged to repeat the impressive jump that he claims to have made on the island of Rhodes. The Latin phrase translates to "here is Rhodes, jump here." A: "I'm friends with everyone in the school!" B: "Oh yeah? "Hic Rhodus, hic salta"—go to talk to that big group of people, I bet you don't know any of them!" A: "All right, star athlete, "hic Rhodus, hic salta"—do your slam dunk here." B: "I told you, I can't, I need my other shoes."

Most debate on the matter--which took place in the pages of Haaretz and the radical website Haokets (Heb.: The Sting)--began with an opinion piece written by longtime journalist, writer, and activist Uri Avnery entitled "Berlin Youth, Return to Israel." Avnery--one of the most learned and proficient wordsmiths in Hebrew journalism--uses the classical Greek proverb hie Rhodus, hie salta (Greek: Here is Rhodes, jump) to implore depressed Israeli radicals residing in Berlin to return because "those with vigor and initiative, those who yearn for freedom, those are the ones we need to save the country from Netanyahu and his cronies" (Haaretz, July 28, 2016).
