cliché Used to indicate that one has encountered some unforeseen problem or difficulty. A misquote of radio communications between the crew of the Apollo 13 spacecraft and NASA's Mission Control Center (referred to by its call sign, Houston). Primarily heard in US. A: "What's the status of the new software update?" B: "Um, Houston, we have a problem. It seems that the compiler detected several critical errors in the code." A: "Well, can you see anything wrong with the engine?" B: "Uh oh. Houston, we have a problem!"
