audi alteram partem
From Latin, literally "hear the other side," used as a maxim in law to signify the importance that no accused party be convicted or condemned without first having a chance to refute or contest the accusation, evidence, and witnesses against them. A: "I think it's pretty plain to see that he is guilty." B: "Now, now—audi alteram partem! Without due process, our legal system would not survive."
