slang To act in a way that warrants the punishment or other repercussion that follows. Did you draw on the wall? Oh, you're asking for it now! Mary is a very patient person, so if she dumped Phil, he must have asked for it. OK, you asked for it! I'm going to knock your block off!

1. You are getting what you requested. The waiter set a huge bowl of ice cream, strawberries, and whipped cream in front of Mary, saying apologetically, "You asked for it!" Bill: Gee, this escargot stuff is gross! Mary: You asked for it!
2. You are getting the punishment you deserve! Bill: The tax people just ordered me to pay a big fine. Bob: The careless way you do your tax forms caused it. You asked for it! Mother: I'm sorry to have to punish you in this fashion, but you asked for it! Bill: I did not!

If something bad happens to someone or is done to someone and you say that they asked for it, you mean that they deserved it. I may have been cruel to Brian on occasions, but he asked for it.
