1. informal The punishment, defeat, severe or unpleasant treatment, etc., that one must face. I know that I have to take my lumps as an intern to earn the other employees' trust and move up the corporate ladder. You're a freshman, so you just have to take your lumps from the upper classmen. I have no interest in starting over at a new company and taking my lumps from kids half my age.
2. informal A punishment that is particularly appropriate for or deserved by one. Don't worry, that lying weasel will get her lumps once the boss realizes what she's done. Annie has been so annoying lately, but I know she'll get her lumps if she keeps speaking out of turn in class. Ray will find the informant and give him his lumps—behavior like that does not go ignored.
