(as) free as (the) air

The phrase means the same as "free," but with more emphasis.
1. Unencumbered; without constraints or restrictions. I'm as free as air this Friday! Do you want to meet for dinner? A: "Are you still with Brian?" B: "Nope, I'm single now—free as the air!" You're about to have a baby. Your days of being free as the air are over, pal.
2. Happy and untroubled. Betty must be free as air because I never see her in a bad mood. I miss the days of being free as the air, back before I had adult problems, like bills to pay. I have felt free as air since getting engaged. When Josh popped the question, it was truly the happiest moment of my life.

(as) free as (the) ˈair/as a ˈbird

completely free: You can’t imagine what it’s like to feel as free as the air. Nobody who hasn’t been in prison can imagine it.
