Fallen man has retained a love of idleness, but the curse weighs on the race not only because we have to seek our bread in the sweat of our brows
, but because our moral nature is such that we cannot be both idle and at ease.
Here we stand on our own soil, which we have bought with our goods, which we have won with our swords, which we have cleared with our axes, which we have tilled with the sweat of our brows
, which we have sanctified with our prayers to the God that brought us hither
I tell you that the hour is come, when we must rally round one another as One united power, and crumble into dust the oppressors that too long have battened upon the plunder of our families, upon the sweat of our brows
, upon the labour of our hands, upon the strength of our sinews, upon the God- created glorious rights of Humanity, and upon the holy and eternal privileges of Brotherhood
We will not allow the income that is won by the sweat of our brow
or the spark of our creativity to be used to send our sons and daughters abroad to be killed and injured, and to slaughter innocents.
Money which the government (by sleight of the political hand and threats of the utmost rigour of the law) removes from the modest wedge that we try to earn by the sweat of our brow
Too often we delude ourselves that it is the sweat of our brow
that has built this wealth.
So why should she expect those of us who earn more by the sweat of our brow
to pay more for the same council services provided for the person next door?
We who built this country with the sweat of our brow
, we, the steelworkers, autoworkers, the miners, the aircraft workers, communication workers, the laborers, the people who teach the children, who farm the land, who drive the trucks, who clean the streets; we who hunger for justice, who nurse the sick, who represent the oppressed, who serve the meals, who stand at check out counters, who build the bridges, who sleep under the bridges, who hunger for food; we, who put out the fires, who police the streets; who protect this nation and the freedoms we celebrate tonight: the soldiers, the sailors, marines and airforce.
