1. Fig. very wealthy. I wouldn't mind being filthy rich. There are too many filthy rich people now.
2. Fig. people who are very wealthy. The filthy rich can afford that kind of thing, but I can't. I sort of feel sorry for the filthy rich.

There is something stinkingly hypocritical and patronising in such manifestations of wealth and plenty in a land that is stricken by poverty.
But now that Alexander is six foot underground and Plato isn't faring much better, does the "cradle of civilisation" still have plenty left to offer away from sun, sea and stinkingly strong ouzo?
