Musically, the period allowed its composers to select from a pastiche of front-porch gut-bucket rhythms -- gospel, blues and jazz. The first three are notable (and similar) in that like Polly Jean herself, they've sunk their roots deep in Wolf howl and rich Mud, and made them something personal: when they sing, they make the sound of the proverbial "long snake's moan," equal parts Delta roll, gut-bucket wail, and voodoo cry. Shorty's just-released third album for the Black Top label, ``Roll Over, Baby,'' is a high-octane mix of New Orleans rock and r&b, Texas shuffles and gut-bucket blues. |
