Magdalena rhapsodizes about Nathan, her American "god risen from the sea" whose functions in the novel are to briefly expostulate on the redefinition of American democracy and even more briefly provide a venue for Magdalena's acting out of her erotic desires (acting outside of her expected roles) and produce a mestiza daughter who will provide the novel's prologue and epilogue. |
