In 1993, Films by Jove and Soyuzmultfilm filed suit in Paris against SEF and SEF-Europe.
As word began to filter out about the Films by Jove case, Mosfilm decided to act.

of Studio City will be releasing Russian animated movies, made before the Soviet Union's breakup.
The Russian government has twice tried to invalidate Judge Trager's August 2001 summary judgment decision and transfer the copyrights to a library of 1,500 animated films, which Films by Jove licensed from Soyuzmultfilm Studios in 1992 to a new state-owned company.
At that hearing, a newly created Russian state-owned Studio entered the case as a third party, claiming that it owned the copyrights that Films by Jove had licensed in 1992.
On December 24, 2003, after Judge Trager issued his damages award to Films by Jove, the Russian government responded with Directive 1882-r.
However, insofar as this ruling affects the rights of a non-Russian party, Films by Jove, which invested over three million dollars in acquiring the copyright license for Soyuzmultfilm Studio's films and developing the commercial value of these copyrights, the sudden shift in Russian law effected by the High Court decision, which operates to deprive an American corporation of its substantial investment, is simply unconscionable.
My concern," said Films by Jove President Joan Borsten, "is that what happened to us has, or will happen, to many other small businesses in the United States which invested in Russia during the 1990s.
