put (something) back in(to) play

To resume play by returning a ball, puck, etc., to the area or position where the main play of a sport occurs. The referee gave the team a penalty because their goalie kept hold of the ball without putting it back in play. The clock is still counting down, so the team is eager to put the ball back into play so they can even the score.
