down the memory hole

down the memory hole

Deliberately erased from one's or the public's knowledge or awareness. A reference to the novel 1984, in which the "memory hole" was a nickname for the Ministry of Truth's system of changing or eradicating evidence and historical facts that conflict with the Party's agenda. The administration is already trying to distance itself from the scandal, as various articles, social media posts, and other sundry pieces connected to the party disappear down the memory hole. The company is obviously trying to flush their previous product down the memory hole after it proved to be one its worst failures of all time. In light of the public outcry over the book's racist imagery, the publishing house has removed it from circulation, effectively sending it down the memory hole.
