To continually criticize or question oneself, usually about something that one cannot change. Oh, honey, I know you're upset about failing the driver's license test, but try not to beat yourself up too much. I've been really beating myself up about that fight I had with my mom. I wish I could take back a lot of the things I said. I didn't like the culture at that company anyway, so I'm not exactly beating myself up about not taking that job.

beat oneself up

Fig. to be overly critical of one's behavior or actions; to punish oneself with guilt and remorse over past actions. (Not a physical beating. Fixed order.) It's over and done with. There's no need to beat yourself up. He's beating himself up over his role in the accident.
