A person, usually a man, who lacks sophistication and has a lower socioeconomic status than their romantic partner. Primarily heard in UK. When Jenny, a refined and successful businesswoman, started dating a plumber, many of her colleagues secretly called him a bit of rough. I'd be very happy to end up with a bit of rough. Growing up in an aristocratic family taught me that money sure isn't everything. Of course she's dating a lumberjack type who lives in the woods—she's always been drawn to a bit of rough.
