Things fail or decline slowly, after an accumulation of problems or difficulties. A play on the phrase "Rome wasn't built in a day," meaning that major undertakings are not completed all at once. Most people don't decide to get divorced overnight—relationships typically fall apart slowly over time. Rome wasn't burned in a day, after all.
