work (one's) way along

To move or work intently or methodically in order to proceed along some path or along the edge or side of something. The inspector worked her way along the exterior of the building to check that all was in order. We were working our way along the trail for most of the afternoon.

to move or labor alongside something or a route. She worked her way along the ledge and finally came to a wide space where she could relax. They worked themselves along the jungle path, chopping and cutting as they went.
