walk on

1. noun One who has joined a sports team without having been recruited, drafted, or awarded a scholarship. The phrase is often hyphenated when used as a noun. The quarterback was a walk-on in 2011 but quickly became one of the star athletes on the team. No, I wasn't recruited or anything, I'm a walk-on.
2. verb To join a sports team in this manner. The quarterback walked on in 2011, and he quickly became one of the star athletes on the team. She thought she'd be able to walk on to any team in the league, but she remained a free agent for nearly two years.
