veer off course

1. To begin to unintentionally move in the wrong direction or away from the intended path. Could you check the map? I think the ship is veering a bit off course. The van veered off course on the highway and struck another vehicle at high speed.
2. To go against or stray away from an established plan or the correct or intended course of action. This project has veered so far off course that I don't know if it's even worth continuing anymore. I used to have my whole life planned out, but between the divorce and the layoff, it feels like I'm veering completely off course.
