turn on the heat

1. To put more pressure on someone or something in order to achieve the results one desires. We'll need to turn on the heat, or they'll never get the new software update done in time.
2. To start to do something with more determination or intensity. Wow, they really turned on the heat after halftime, eliminating a 15-point deficit in just two possessions of the ball.
