3. To cause something to be compared to, juxtaposed with, or considered alongside something else. Your issues become downright laughable when you thrust them up against the harrowing traumas suffered everyday by people around the world. My project suddenly seemed rather inconsequential once it was thrust up against the things other departments were working on.
