old-fashioned An expression of shock, surprise, or alarm. A: "We are sending you to London to take over the business there." B: "The devil you say! But I have no inclination to move to London!" A: "Someone has stolen nearly $1 million from the company." B: "The devil you say! How on earth could this have happened?"
