set phrase A shortening of "thanks be to God," used to express great gratitude (for someone or something) or relief (that something did or didn't happen). Thanks be for the incredible first responders who saved so many lives during the storm. A: "Hi Mom, it's Allison. I just wanted to let you know that I'm all right." B: "Oh, thanks be! When I heard about the accident, I feared the worst!"
