An uncommon or difficult word used in lieu of a simpler one, as to emphasize the speaker's intelligence. He's "effusive," huh? Couldn't you just have said "enthusiastic"? Why the ten-dollar word? She's an English teacher with an inferiority complex, so buckle up for a lot of ten-dollar words.
