1. To speak in a self-absorbed and self-important manner, without much or any regard for those to whom one is speaking. I learned pretty quickly that the boss just likes to talk for the sake of talking. She'll find any excuse to give you a long-winded lecture about something you already know. Political blowhards like these just talk for the sake of talking.
2. To make idle chitchat solely to avoid silence. I always hate being around someone who feels compelled to talk for the sake of talking. I'd much rather be left with my thoughts when there are pauses in conversation.
