take revenge on (someone or something) for (something)

To retaliate against a person, group, organization, etc., for a wrong done to oneself; to seek or exact vengeance against someone or something for some reason. I took revenge on Tiffany for gossiping about me by starting a rumor that she was sleeping with one of our teachers. The team is looking to take revenge on their cross-town rivals for knocking them out of the state playoffs last season.
