start at the bottom (of the ladder)

To begin at the lowest, most basic position of a hierarchy. I started at the bottom in this industry. My first job was in the mailroom of a small independent production company—now I run the one of the biggest film studios in the world! Tech startups may start at the bottom of the ladder economically, but, given their business model, they have a very high potential for growth.
