To reveal or indicate a great deal about something. How you react to challenges speaks volumes for your character. He didn't answer the question directly, but his response spoke volumes for how he would address the issue if elected. Her choice of dress for the event spoke volumes for her fashion sensibilities—or lack thereof, in this case.
