shut away

1. To confine or isolate someone from others. In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between "shut" and "away." I promise, ma'am, that we will catch the man who did this and shut him away for the rest of his life. His parents shut away their son because they didn't want him to be corrupted by the outside world.
2. To withdraw or isolate oneself from other people or society at large. In this usage, a reflexive pronoun is used between "shut" and "away." He just shut himself away after his wife died. You can't keep shutting yourself away like this. We're getting worried about you.
3. To repress or conceal something. I tried to shut away my anger, but I couldn't hide from it any longer. She shut the secret away deep within her heart.
