sit shiva

Judaism To mourn for a period of seven days following the funeral of a close relative. "Shiva" comes from the Hebrew word שבעה (šib'â), meaning "seven." We visited them while they were sitting shiva after Harold's funeral. My mom brought a bunch of casseroles so they wouldn't have to worry about cooking.
