run up a debt

To accumulate a large bill or debt that one is obliged to pay. I know we have a lot of repairs to make, but we have to be smart about it. We can't just do everything at once and run up a debt. Apparently, he ran up a lot of credit card debt that he couldn't pay off, so he slipped across the border to Canada.
