run into a roadblock

1. To encounter a physical barrier that prevents or hinders forward progress. Sorry, we're going to be a little late. We ran into a roadblock and had to take the long way around.
2. By extension, to encounter an issue, problem, or challenge that halts or hinders forward progress. We've run into a major roadblock. I just got word that Senator Smith isn't voting in favor of our bill. Of course I've run into roadblocks throughout my life—I've just never let any of them deter me.
