relate back to (something)

To have some reference, relation, or connection to some past event, situation, action, etc. A: "I'm sorry, why are you bringing this up?" B: "Oh, it relates back to what we were saying earlier about Medieval Europe." The plaintiff told the court that the dispute related back to a sum of money he had lent to the defendant.
