To deny certain services to people regarded as high economic risks. Commonly seen in the refusal to grant mortgages to nonwhite people looking to move into particular areas. When lenders redline, it forces lots of people to stay in terrible parts of the city because there's just no way out.

redlining

The practice of refusing certain services to people regarded as high economic risks. Commonly seen in the refusal to grant mortgages to nonwhite people looking to move into particular areas. Redlining has kept lots of people in this terrible part of the city. There's just no way out. There are laws that aim to curb redlining today, but for years, that wasn't the case, and many good people suffered unnecessarily.
