To raise one's hand to indicate that one agrees, wants to answer or ask a question, intends to participate, or wants what is being offered. Don't yell out your questions, kids—put your hands up! I do raise put my hand up in class, Mom, but the teacher never calls on me! Everyone who wants to come, put your hands up now.

1. To raise one's hands to surrender, as to the police. Often used as an imperative. We have the building surrounded! Put your hands up and come out where we can see you! Video clearly shows the man putting his hands up slowly—and not reaching for a weapon as initially claimed.
2. To accept or admit one's fault, mistake, or culpability. Look, I'll put my hands up and say that this was my fault. I should have been more careful. It's not everyday that a politician puts their hands up and admits they were wrong.
