put (one's) foot to the floor

1. To rapidly accelerate or go at a very high speed while driving. We'll only have a few minutes to get away, so make sure you put your foot to the floor as soon as I get in the car!
2. To do something with a great amount of effort, energy, or determination. The two were very evenly matched at the beginning of the set, but as her opponent began to tire, Williams put her foot to the floor and secured a hard-fought victory.
