prequel

A film, TV show, or other media franchise that exists within the same fictional universe as a previous installment in the series but depicts chronologically earlier events, as by showing the characters at younger ages. A blending of "pre-" and "sequel." Prequels can be really bad, but "Better Call Saul" is critically acclaimed. Your girlfriend likes the "Star Wars" prequels better than the original trilogy? Oh man, you've gotta dump her!
