poor devil

A pitiful or pitiable person; one whom others pity. ("Devil" is used for emphasis, not to indicate evil or malevolence.) A: "What on earth happened to John?" B: "Poor devil lost his job, his house, and his wife." A: "Please, can you help me?" B: "Oh, you poor devil. Here, use this money to buy some food."
