play the numbers game

1. To prioritize or focus on increasing the quantity of something, especially without regard to quality. Unfortunately, you have to play the numbers game when you date. The more people you meet, the better your chances are at finding love. I refuse to play the numbers game on social media. Who cares if I only have 45 followers when they're people I actually know and like?
2. To participate in an illegal lottery in which one bets on the appearance of certain numbers in a newspaper or other publication, usually related to racing. Primarily heard in US. Why do you think Grandpa was so poor? Because any time he had any money, he'd lose it playing the numbers game!
