slang To be oblivious to one's surroundings or act strangely. I have no idea what the professor said during today's lecture because I was on another planet the whole time. The millionaire investor always says something wacky in the board meetings—it's like he's on living another planet. You're living on another planet if you think your father and I are getting you a car for your sixteenth birthday. If you want a car, start saving your pennies!

If you're on one end of the political spectrum, people at the other end seem like they're on a different planet. A mnemonic device for remembering the names of the eight planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune, as well as the dwarf planet Pluto. A: "I think they should just do away with taxes altogether!" B: "What planet are you from? Taxes pay for hospitals, roads, our military—literally everything on which our society is built." What planet is he from? He could get someone killed driving that speed along a residential road!
