pick (one's) head up

To raise one's gaze, particularly if one is looking down or away from someone or something. Pick your head up and look at me when I'm talking to you! Even though I was devastated after Brandon broke up with me, I had to pick my head up and act like everything was fine—I didn't want anyone to know how badly I was hurting.
