pay a king's ransom (for something)

To pay an exorbitant sum of money for something. I've always wanted to vacation in Hawaii, but not if I have to pay a king's ransom for plane tickets. A: "Oh, someone finally bought that big mansion?" B: "Yep, and I hear they paid a king's ransom, too."
