pacta sunt servanda

From Latin, literally "agreements must be kept," a basic legal principle that the agreements and stipulations of a contract are binding to the parties involved. The court ruled that the insurer was required, according to the principle of pacta sunt servanda, to honor the plaintiff's claim, as it clearly fell within the terms of the policy.
