Ozone gas is a transparent gas of at least 1% of the atmosphere, a toxic gas.
In 1987 representatives from 24 countries met in Montreal and announced to the world that it was time to stop destroying the
ozone layer.
Stratospheric
ozone influences weather, and this influence is detectable due to the
ozone hole.
CFCs are long-lived chemical compounds that eventually rise into the stratosphere, where they are broken apart by the Sun's ultraviolet radiation, releasing chlorine atoms that go on to destroy
ozone molecules.

The smaller
ozone hole in 2017 was strongly influenced by an unstable and warmer Antarctic vortex - the stratospheric low pressure system that rotates clockwise in the atmosphere above Antarctica.
"Even though it was relatively large, the size of this year's
ozone hole was within the range we'd expect given the levels of manmade, ozone-depleting chemicals that continue to persist," said Paul Newman, chief atmospheric scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.
Ozone, in gaseous or aqueous phase, has been shown to be a powerful and reliable antimicrobial agent against bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and viruses.
This thin layer of
ozone acts as Earth's natural sunscreen, absorbing the sun's powerful ultraviolet (UV) rays.

Dohm and his colleagues at the University of Hawaii at Hilo placed cane toads (Buff) marinus), collected locally, into a chamber for 4 hours with air containing 0.2 to 0.8 part per million (ppm)
ozone. That's well above the 0.01 ppm
ozone concentration typical of Hilo.
Your article, "The Science of Sanitization" by Julie Sturgeon (8/22/03), is inaccurate and misleading regarding residential
ozone. Specifically, DEL
Ozone believes that a reader would be confused whether
ozone is beneficial or not for their particular pool application.
Researchers blame the rural trees' stunted growth on higher sustained levels of
ozone originating in the city.
