informal A greeting used in the morning, especially toward someone who seems tired or grouchy. A: "Morning, sunshine! Looks like you didn't sleep too well." B: "Coffee. Now." A: "Good morning, sunshine." B: It's 4:00 AM—what's good about it?" A: "Morning, sunshine. Good news—I pushed back your 8:00 meeting." B: "Oh, bless you!"

top of the morning (to you)

cliché A generic greeting used in the morning time. (The phrase is considered stereotypical or stock Irish, rather than one that is used naturally by Irish people.) Top of the morning, Bill! That was quite a party last night, wasn't it? A: "Well, top o' the morning to you, my friend!" B: "I wish you would stop saying that to me, just because my dad is Irish."
