mitigate against (something)
To lessen the impact, effect, or severity of something. This construction is sometimes considered informal or incorrect, possibly because the meaning can be conveyed by the word "mitigate" alone, without the inclusion of "against." The company promptly fired the CEO in an attempt to mitigate against the negative publicity caused by his scandal. What can we do to mitigate against the environmental effects of the nuclear incident?
