pure merino

Primarily heard in Australia.
1. An early settler in Australia who was not a convict. (The first British settlement in Australia was a penal colony.) Primarily heard in New Zealand. Convicts were not the only early European inhabitants of Australia, you know—free men referred to as "pure merinos" came too.
2. An affluent, important person in colonial Australian society. A: "Her family has been here since the 19th century, and I hear they were just as wealthy and respected back then." B: "Pure merinos, huh?"
